Everything Megashift | Gloss Liquid Wrap
Â
EVERYTHING MEGASHIFT
Unfortunately there are people aout there bringing a bad name to Liquid Wrap. We are here to combat that. We removed this poorly installed liquid wrap and replaced it with Raail Spherical and Gloss Clear Coat for a scratch resistant, gas resistant, more durable finish. This peel-able auto paint will last 5+ years, protect the factory paint, and peel off easier than vinyl. Here’s how we did it.

Â
REMOVE
We got a call asking if we can fix their car. Another shop had installed a liquid wrap on this Mercedes and it was clear they had cut some corners. Not enough gallons, sloppy masking, drips/runs and little effort in general. It’s work like this that makes the industry look bad and it’s one of the reasons we started making videos on the correct way to do things. I’m not saying we are perfect by any means however we do take pride in the work. This project took a lot of time and hard work but we got this car looking right in the end. Usually we start off with a wash but first we have to get this stuff off. The main problem here was not enough product was used to cover this full size SUV. This means the coating doesn’t peel like it is intended to and instead it just chips away like old paint. Unfortunately we have seen our fair share of installers use less product to save on material cost and time. Its greedy and just plain lazy. In order to get this off we use a combination of techniques. Pressure washing, chemicals, and good ol’ friction. After it’s all off we wash the car with water and Dawn dish soap.

MASK
It was clear that the other shop did not mask the car off properly. We took our time and did it right. The trim is going to end up gloss black so it needs to stay unmasked until the basecoat is down then masked with delicate surface tape to prevent damage to the wrap. We make sure to mask off the engine bay, radiator, gas cap, and wheel wells to prevent overspray. The Starter Kit came in handy here as it comes with Plazmask, Solvent Resistant Paper, and Tape.
Â
Â
BASE
This is a big SUV and it needs a ton of paint. Like 6 gallons of paint. In order to save time without sacrificing quality we used the Wagner Pro 130 AHS sprayer for the base. This sprayer is an airless sprayer meaning more product comes out and we can lay down the appropriate amount of gallons quicker. Then we masked up the trim and grill with delicate surface tape so it stays black.
Â
Â
COLOR
Next up is the color. The owner chose Everything Megashift which, just as the name implies, has just about every color. Green-Orange-Yellow-Purple-Blue-Teal this is a crazy shift and we actually have never sprayed it before on a car (only speedshapes). We used Raail Spherical with 25g of pearl per gallon sprayed with a compressor, HVLP, and 1.7mm tip. This pearl shows best over a black base. Spraying over a colored base instead of black will not look too good since this pearl is a pink/magenta color in pigment form. Black base for sure.
Â
Â
CLEARCOAT
Next up is gloss so we unmask the trim and expose the black. For Raail Spherical Gloss we switch guns to a clean gun with no residue inside and a 1.3mm tip. The car gets 2 medium/wet coats and then we let it dry for about 6 hours. Unfortunately, Tropical Storm Ian was right on top of us at this time and we opened up the garage doors a little too soon. The hood got some trash on it while drying. It wasn’t the worst and we could have just delivered as is but that’s just not in our DNA. We pull out the DA sander and smoothed out the entire car then gave it one last coat of gloss for the best possible finish we could do given the circumstances.
Â
Â
UNMASK
We want to unmask after the coating has dried so we wait about 6-8 hours before removing all masking materials. A rag and some thinner will take care of any overspray and this truck is ready for delivery. We were finishing just as the customer arrived so we didn’t get too much footage of the car complete but it looked a hell of a lot better than when it came in. Plus this coating is much more durable than just regular AirWrap. Definitely take pride in your work. Your customers will thank you. As always, everything we used is listed below and feel free to give us a call if you are looking to get your car done in Jacksonville!
