We liquid wrapped this Range Rover with Raail AirWrap in the color “Frostbite” from DrPigment.com. This peel-able auto paint will last 3+ years, protect the factory paint, and peel off easier than vinyl. Here’s how we did it.
MASK
After a good wash and dry, we start masking. Every car is different but with a little help, this one didn’t take too long. I used Plazmask for the windows and sunroof. This is a pre-taped plastic film that saves a lot of time masking. I used solvent resistant paper and tape for everything else and removed the badges with a heat gun and some fishing line. The starter kit from DrPigment has pretty much everything you need when it comes to masking.
BASE
For this vehicle I am using a 60gal compressor and 1.7mm tip laying a base coat of Raail AirWrap Black. I start with light coats and gradually get wetter allowing enough time in between for the coats to dry. The flash tends to be around 10-15 minutes. This car is going to get about 4gal of black base to ensure that the wrap comes out thick enough.
COLOR
The customer chose a nice metallic blue called “Frostbite”. I mixed in one 8oz drop-in-tint per gallon of clear AirWrap. All in all I used about 2gal of color on the car meaning it has 6gal of total product and should be plenty thick. While spraying I am trying to stay at an even distance from each panel and overlap my spray pattern by 50%. This will prevent striping and pearl build up that would otherwise leave the finish looking uneven. Right after the last coat goes down I immediately start unmasking while it is still wet.
UNMASK
While unmasking I am careful to not let anything touch the paint while it is still drying. This coating dries quick however and was completely dry before I even finished. Frostbite has pearl mixed in giving it a nice reflective, metallic look in direct sunlight. Although I didn’t catch the reaction on camera, the customer definitely loved it and that’s all that matters.
