Déjà Vu Colorshift
We liquid wrapped this Tesla Model 3 in a Liquid Wrap with Gloss Clear Coat for a scratch resistant, gas resistant, more durable finish. This peel-able auto paint will last 5+ years, protect the factory paint, and peel off easier than vinyl. Here’s how we did it.
WASH
I love working on Teslas. Masking is a breeze and the simple body shape makes it easier to spray. We did this color just recently in a satin finish on a model x plaid. Low and behold another Tesla owner saw that on our social media and came to us requesting it in gloss. This model 3 had clearly been liquid wrapped before in matte black. Not sure of the brand or installer but they didn’t quite do enough coats. I still had to pick off the pieces around the edges. Pressure washing came in handy for the hard to reach places.
MASK
Since the roof and both windshields are not getting sprayed, this car was a piece of cake to mask. Some short Plazmask for the side windows, long Plazmask for the roof and it was basically good to go. The only real issues were the gaskets along the windshield and roof. Some J-Tape or similar trim tape easily pulls this gasket back letting the paint grab hold of the edge.
BASE
This is a pretty small car so no need for a High Solid Turbine. We used the compressor for the entire project starting with a Black Basecoat. I’m using a Spectrum Black Widow HVLP gun with 1.7mm tip. About 1.5gallons and she’s good to go.
COLOR
Déjà Vu pearl is white in powder form so pairing with a Booster is a must. Luckily the owner wanted it with a Blue Booster for a deeper color. I mixed about 25g of pearl per gallon of Spherical Base (un-tinted) and added 4oz of Blue Booster per gallon. Still using the same HVLP setup for this mix.
CLEARCOAT
I switched guns to a clean one with a 1.3mm tip for the clearcoat. The Gloss needs about 2 medium/wet coats. The next day I decided to flow-coat for an even smoother finish so after sanding I applied 1 last wet coat of Gloss and let it dry for about 6hrs.
UNMASK
Unmasking was super simple and the car was ready for pickup. The finish came out great even without a paint booth. Definitely our best work so far.
