Frozen Grey | Satin Liquid Wrap
FROZEN GREY
We liquid wrapped this 2014 Toyota Tundra in a Satin Clear Coat for a scratch resistant, gas resistant, more durable finish. This peel-able auto paint will last 5+ years, protect the factory paint, and peel off easier than vinyl. Here’s how we did it.
WASH
First we start with a good wash with water and Dawn dish soap. Dawn is readily available, affordable, and cuts through grease and grime effectively. Oils and residue on the car will prevent Liquid Wraps from adhering properly. We let the vehicle dry for 24hrs and take an air hose to all the cracks and crevices. A quick wipe down with denatured alcohol and water and it’s ready to start masking.
MASK
Quality materials really make a difference. We make sure to use solvent proof paper and tape to minimize overspray. Plazmask (pre-taped masking film) helps cover windows quickly and easily. Masking is probably the most important part of the process so we make sure to take our time and do it right.
BASE
This is a pretty big truck and we don’t want to be here all weekend spraying 7 gallons of product so we pull out the Wagner Pro 130 AHS sprayer for the base. This sprayer is an airless sprayer meaning more product comes out and we can lay down the appropriate amount of gallons quicker. For a darker color like Frozen Grey we choose a Black Base. We put down about 3 gallons of Black Base in just about 2hrs and then move on to the color.
COLOR
Frozen Grey goes down next and we are still using the Wagner Pro 130 to get the job done easier. We put down about 3 gallons of Frozen Grey making sure that the coating will be thick enough to peel properly. We let that dry for about an hour before moving on.
CLEARCOAT
Next is our Satin Clear Coat. This will maintain the Satin sheen and finish while providing more protection. This coating is scratch resistant, gas resistant, and more durable. Perfect for a truck like this. Sadly, cannot be sprayed out of the Wagner. Ideally you would use a compressor providing best atomization but it is possible to spray this out of a Stage 3 turbine as well. Just make sure you use an all metal gun and 1.3 tip. Luckily we have a compressor so we are going to use that. This clear coat has a 4:1 mixture ratio. 4 parts Satin Clear Coat, 1 part Activator. We use a special paint mixing cup to portion correctly. We put about 2 coats down on this truck or about 1 gallon sealing in the base and color and giving it that Satin finish.
UNMASK
We want to unmask after the coating has dried so we wait about 6-8 hours before removing all masking materials. A rag and some thinner will take care of any overspray and this truck is ready for delivery. This whole process took only about 2 work days although we spread it over 3 to be safe and the owner loves his new look. Let us know what you think in the comments!
