HEISENBURG BLUE

We liquid wrapped this 2021 Hyundai Santa Fe in Raail Spherical with Gloss Clear Coat for a scratch resistant, gas resistant, more durable finish. This peel-able auto paint will last 5+ years, protect the factory paint, and peel off easier than vinyl. Here’s how we did it.

MASK

Here we start off with the car clean, washed 24hrs before. We get to masking, making sure to leave the trim exposed so we can paint it black. Usually I leave the door jambs unmasked just because it is easier to wipe the overspray off with a towel afterwards. The Starter Kit from DrPigment has all the materials we need; Plazmask, paper, tape, scissors, and more. After the car is masked we wipe it down with water and denatured alcohol to remove any fingerprints or left over dirt.

BASE

ALWAYS have a test panel. I use an old car hood to dial in my gun settings and make sure the coating is spraying right. I had some Spherical Clear in the hopper so I went ahead and threw 2 coats un-tinted on the car. This is the same basecoat just without the black tint. I just wanted to see how it looked and some extra thickness is never a bad thing when it comes to peelable paint. I then added the Black tint and switched from the compressor to the HS sprayer to lay down the base coat. The HS sprayer lays down much more product saving time and providing the thickness needed for the base coat. After the Black base coat was applied we let it dry over night in order to mask the trim the next day.

COLOR

Now that the Base coat is dry we used some delicate tape over the trim just to ensure it doesn’t peel the coating when we go to remove. We switch back to the compressor to avoid any bleed through and start spraying the Heisenburg Blue. For a car this size you want about 5 gallons of product on to make sure that the coating is durable and also peelable down the road. After the Heisenburg Blue is down we unmasked the trim in order to spray the gloss over everything.

CLEARCOAT

Gloss is always tricky but even more so since i spray out of a commercial garage and not a paint booth. For matte and satin coatings this is usually fine but every dust particle in the air will show on gloss. To minimize this I clean the shop obviously but I also wet the ground so dust and dirt will stick to the ground rather than fly up on to the car. The dog and cat had to be taken home too. We put about 2 coatings of gloss down and let it dry with the intentions of flow coating later. After its dry you can see some trash and orange peel in the coating which is why we planned to flow coat.

FLOWCOAT

We sand the coating down with about 1600 grit sand paper in order to get rid of any nibs, trash, ripples, etc. You definitely want to use an automatic sander as opposed to doing this by hand. Once its smooth and to our liking we wipe it down with a dry towel and air dry it off then put another coat of gloss on. This gives it the smoothest and cleanest look possible in my situation. My standards are pretty high for my own work which can lead to some self caused frustration but also a better product for the customer.

UNMASK

We want to unmask after the coating has dried so we wait about 6-8 hours before removing all masking materials. A rag and some thinner will take care of any overspray and this SUV is ready for delivery. All in all the coating came out looking good, the Heisenburg Blue popping in the sun light and the customer was happy. I haven’t sprayed too many cars in Spherical Gloss but if I can learn so can you. Everything we used is available on our site and we only sell stuff that we have personally tested and approved of.
