We liquid wrapped this Dodge Durango in Raail AirWrap with the color Crazy Deep Dark Black from DrPigment. This peel-able auto paint will last 3+ years, protect the factory paint, and peel off easier than vinyl. Here’s how we did it.
MASK
The customer had a few dings on the car and said it was ok to sand them down. He had also used a peelable paint on his grill a few years ago and it was in pretty bad shape now. We cleaned up the car with a Claybar and Raail Wrapsol then got to masking. We used a combination of Solvent Resistant Paper, 3m Tape, and Plazmask for the vehicle. Sll these materials are included in the Starter Kit from DrPigment.com
BASE
Since we are spraying black and the car is already black, I wanted to make sure I put the right amount of coats on so I sprayed dark grey first then the color over it. This was purely psychological. It makes the whole process seem faster and its also a great way to ensure color coverage. This car is going to get about 7 gallons of product total.
COLOR
Switching it up to Crazy Deep Dark Black now. I am using the Wagner Pro 130 sprayer for this vehicle since it is so big. This is an airless sprayer so it puts down a lot more product than the conventional HVLP and turbine. I have to use a special coating for this sprayer called Raail AHS (AirWrap High Solid). This is a thicker coating made for airless systems.
WHOOPS
Shortly after spraying I start noticing the gun spitting chunks. I had not cleaned the sprayer well enough before starting and bits of old paint from previous projects were ejecting from the gun. I stopped to clean the system but the car was already covered in defects. In a last ditch effort to save it before peeling the entire thing I decided to gently sand down the surface.
RESPRAY
After sanding the surface smooth with 2000 grit sandpaper and my DA sander, I hooked up the compressor and HVLP gun. I decided to ditch the airless system and go slowly. I laid AirWrap Super Matte down for a thick wet coat then applied a top coat of AirWrap Satin for more of a shine. Luckily this turned out great and I ended up saving the project and gallons of paint. Lesson learned for sure.
UNMASK
We want to unmask right after spraying the last coat so the paint is still wet. A rag and some thinner will take care of any overspray and this SUV is ready for delivery. This whole process took only about 3 work days and the owner loves his new look. As always, all the products used are listed below and feel free to reach out to us for any help.
